Crews treating roads in Lawrence as snow falls, temperatures drop

A hazardous weather warning is in effect for Douglas County on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. An additional inch of snow is expected to fall Sunday during the day and into the evening. Sunday’s high will be 35 degrees and the low will be 6 degrees overnight.

City and county crews are monitoring conditions on roads in the area for ice and snow accumulation. Mike Perkins, street division manager for the city of Lawrence, said trucks were out on Sunday morning spreading deicing materials to stay ahead of the conditions.

“Right now everything’s just wet,” Perkins said Sunday morning. But as temperatures fall, slick roads may develop, the National Weather Service reported. Isolated areas across northeast Kansas may see reduced visibilities because of blowing snow.

A strong cold front will increase, and northwest winds will be between 20 and 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph Sunday morning and through this afternoon.
