Man, 30, drowns Saturday at Perry Lake

A 30-year-old man drowned Saturday evening at Perry Lake, law enforcement officials said.

At 5:25 p.m., Jefferson County deputies responded to an emergency call at the lake, Sheriff Jeff Herrig said. The man’s body was found near the party cove area around 9 p.m., Herrig said.

The drowning is not believed to be suspicious, Herrig said. Rather, authorities believe, the swimmer may have become confused and disoriented in the lake’s murky water.

“It’s a black water lake and a lot of people don’t understand that if you don’t have a life jacket on and you get into the water and you get 2 or 3 feet deep, a lot of people can’t tell where they’re going or if they’re going up or down,” Herrig said.

An investigation into the drowning is ongoing, and police are waiting until an autopsy is performed to positively identify the victim, Herrig said.

Alcohol may have been involved in the drowning, but police won’t know for sure until the autopsy results are in, Herrig said.
