City reopens intersection of 23rd and Massachusetts following gas leak; road repairs continue

The intersection of 23rd and Massachusetts streets is blocked off after road repair crews hit a gas line Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 25, 2015.

The intersection at 23rd and Massachusetts streets was closed to all traffic for more than an hour Tuesday afternoon after road repair crews hit a gas line.

Workers who were repairing damage from a Monday water main break near the intersection hit the line shortly before 1:30 p.m., according to Lawrence Police spokesman Trent McKinley. Roads leading to the intersection reopened around 2:50 p.m. The city confirmed the gas line had been fully repaired by 3:55 p.m.

While gas was leaking from the line, emergency crews went door-to-door evacuating residents and businesses within one block of the intersection.

Road crews continue to repair the asphalt damaged by Monday’s water main break. Two of the three lanes that remained closed Tuesday afternoon are expected to reopen Wednesday night, according to the city.
