40 years ago: A busy day for Lawrence firefighters

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 5, 1975:

Crews at each of Lawrence’s three fire stations were called to respond to fire alarms within an hour’s time last night. The first, a car fire at Fourth and Maine, was reported at 4:55 p.m. and was answered by the crew at Fire Station One, 745 Vermont. Shortly after that, the crew at Station Three responded to a grass fire reported in the 2500 block of Iowa. While they were controlling that blaze, the crew at Fire Station Two, usually assigned to fires in the eastern part of the city, was called to Kansas University, where a summer housecleaner had been burning letters on the dry grass in front of Oliver Hall. The resulting blaze was brought under control without reported damage. Firefighters continued to warn the public against careless use of matches and smoking materials, hoping to avert serious fires until the arrival of rain.
