Off the Beaten Plate: Coconut soup at India Palace

Coconut soup at India Palace, 129 E. 10th St.

For those of us who can’t get enough coconut — or is it a nut? A seed? — India Palace’s creamy but refreshing coconut soup is the perfect appetizer or even dessert.

The soup is sweet — it’s made with milk and coconut juice — and light, aside from the fibrous chunks of shredded coconut floating around the bowl. Did we mention this soup is coconut-y?

Where to get it:India Palace, 129 E. 10th St.

What you’ll pay: $3.50

Try it with: We paired the soup with chicken karahi, a comparatively spicy dish of boneless chicken cooked with garlic, ginger and onions. Wash it all down with a glass of mango lassi, a smoothie-like drink made with yogurt and mango pulp.

Also on the menu: A smattering of Indian classics, many of which you’ll find in the restaurant’s much-loved lunch buffet. The restaurant also serves curries, tandoori specialties, vegetable samosas, a variety of beef, chicken, lamb, seafood and vegetarian dishes, plus nearly 10 (!) different kinds of naan bread.
