40 years ago: Groundbreaking set for new judicial center

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 22, 1974:

  • Groundbreaking ceremonies were planned for Oct. 4 for the new county-city judicial and law enforcement building. County commissioners indicated they intended to invite a number of officials to the event, including the area’s state legislators and mayors from towns and cities throughout the county. B. A. Green Construction Co., Lawrence, was to be the general contractor for the project, and work was expected to begin in late September or early October.
  • Sen. Robert Dole, R-Kan., said today he was “disgusted” about the conditional amnesty plan of President Ford for draft dodgers and deserters. Interviewed at the airport in Topeka prior to his return to Washington, Dole said, “It just seems like we have our nation’s priorities jumbled when it comes to servicemen.” He added that “before America opens its arms to draft dodgers,” it should consider social benefits needed by veterans who had served their country, all the way back to World War I.
