KU alumnus to create art using unwanted household items

Lawrence-based artist and Kansas University alumnus Eli Gold has been selected as artist-in-residence at the Salina Art Center where he plans to complete an installation from Kansans’ accumulated clutter.

Gold will work with volunteers on “Surrounded,” a progressive installation that juxtaposes a handcrafted chair and a massive curved wall made up of wood, stone, salvaged construction material and unwanted items cleared out of Salina residents’ garages, barns and sheds.

“I work within the realms of community, performance and installation to ask a variety of questions about the human relationship to time, work, objects and raw material,” Gold says in a press release.

Items such as old furniture, household items, electronics and appliances will be stored and sorted in the Warehouse, where Gold will work out of and live. After the wall is created, it will be transported into Salina Art Center’s main gallery. While working on the wall, he will fabricate the chair to place it in front of the wall. The exhibition is open until Oct. 19.

Gold moved from Ithaca, N.Y., to Lawrence in 2011 to pursue an MFA in visual arts with an emphasis in metalsmithing and jewelry at Kansas University. His residency in Salina runs through Nov. 1.

Any Salina residents interested in donating material for “Surrounded” can contact the artist at eli.gold@gmail.com for more information.
