Lawrence hosts public meetings, tours in support of police headquarters sales tax

With a sales tax proposal for a new police headquarters on the November ballot, the city of Lawrence has scheduled several events to give voters an opportunity to learn about police department facilities.

Two public meetings and four days of self-guided tours around six police locations are scheduled. The city is seeking a 0.2 percent citywide retail sales tax for the financing, construction and equipping of a new police headquarters.

Police Chief Tarik Khatib, city staff and elected officials will be at public meetings from 7 to 8 p.m. Sept. 25 and Oct. 16 at the Lawrence Police Department Investigations and Training Center, 4820 Bob Billings Parkway.

Additionally, residents can tour six police facilities, with police staff on hand, over the course of four days. They are:

• Law Enforcement Center, 111 E. 11th St.

• Investigations and Training Center, 4820 Bob Billings Parkway

• Stonebarn Storage Facility, 2400 block of Lawrence Avenue

• Douglas County Public Works Evidence Storage, 505 E. 23rd St.

• Morton Block Storage Building, 800 block of East 15th Street

• Animal and Parking Control, 935 New Hampshire St., in the City Parking Garage.

Tours of all buildings will be available from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 13, from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 4, from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 18, and from 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 25.

A new facility would allow police to operate out of one location and maximize efficiency, according to a city news release. More information on the sales tax proposal can be found at www.lawrenceks.org/police-facility.
