The Lawrence Humane Society provides shelter, care and advocacy to stray, homeless and abused animals, and nurtures the human-animal bond. The Humane Society has some kittens living off-site at Petco in Lawrence. These kittens need socializing and care. Volunteers helping with these kittens will clean their cages, feed them and give them plenty of attention while they wait to be adopted. A regular schedule is required. l The Willow Domestic Violence Center provides safe shelter, advocacy and hope for survivors of domestic and family violence in Douglas, Franklin and Jefferson counties. The Willow Domestic Violence Center is currently seeking applications for volunteers interested in working directly with survivors of domestic violence. Training will be offered in November and December, with Saturday sessions starting on Nov. 1 and Tuesday sessions starting on Nov. 4. To enroll, go to www.willowdvcenter.org, no later than Oct. 29. l Communities in Schools supports and empowers students to stay in school and achieve in life. Communities in Schools needs many volunteers to assist with Reality U at Lawrence High School on Nov. 19-20. Reality U provides teens a look at their potential lifestyles at the age of 26, based on their answers to a previously completed survey and their current GPA. Fourteen “life stations,” such as housing, transportation and child care, make up Reality U. Volunteers work at each station providing prepared information to students. Multiple volunteer shifts are available on both days. Training and supplies will be provided. l Kansas University’s Audio-Reader Network provides print-disabled people in Kansas and Missouri with access to the printed word via electronic media. Audio-Reader is looking for volunteer readers to read Kansas City-area newspapers from the Audio-Reader studio at Alphapointe, 7501 Prospect Ave. Volunteers must be able to travel to that location and have weekday morning availability. l Big Brothers Big Sisters of Douglas County provides one-to-one relationships for children facing adversity. For a few hours, a couple times a month, you can give a “Little” the gift of friendship. Big Brothers Big Sisters is looking for a male mentor to spend time with a 9-year-old boy. This boy loves sports, reading and hiking.
