40 years ago: Local construction, food prices mirror national inflation

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 18, 1974:

  • Lawrence construction this month was lagging far behind figures for the same month a year previously, but totals for the year were still slightly ahead of those for 1973. Total housing and business building permits issued in October ended up at $141,540, compared with $570,695 in October 1973. The totals for October, according to later figures, included construction of three homes for a $126,340 total, and one business for $25,200.
  • Family grocery bills were reported to be inching up again this month, according to an Associated Press survey. Sales on meat and eggs had helped consumers trying to conserve funds, offsetting increases in items like detergents. Sugar prices were on the rise again, but there were signs that the “enormous increases” might be drawing to an end.
