Topeka man charged with three felonies after allegedly fleeing Lawrence police

A 26-year-old Topeka man was charged with three felonies Friday after allegedly fleeing from police while illegally in possession of a firearm.

Durrell Scott Thomas appeared via video in front of District Judge James T. George on Friday to formally receive his charges and a bond set at $20,000.

Thomas is charged with felony fleeing and eluding law enforcement; felony obstruction of legal process; criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon; and driving while being a habitual violator, a misdemeanor.

According to Trent McKinley of the Lawrence Police Department, Thomas was driving a vehicle that a police officer attempted to stop after witnessing “suspicious behavior” along Sixth Street at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

McKinley said Thomas’ vehicle accelerated down Lawrence Avenue with the officer in pursuit. Eventually, Thomas lost control of his vehicle and struck a median after turning onto Princeton Boulevard, McKinley said.

Thomas and another male occupant fled from the vehicle in different directions. Thomas was eventually apprehended by three officers after a physical struggle involving the use of a Taser, McKinley said. The other male was not located.
