25 years ago: First freeze expected to arrive tonight

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 17, 1989:

  • Lawrence’s first fall freeze was expected tonight, with temperatures predicted to drop to 30 degrees. The forecast for the following night was even chillier, with a low of 27 degrees and a hard freeze expected. Local gardeners were being advised to cover their plants to protect them against the frost, but a coordinator for the Master Gardeners group warned that covered plants could survive temperatures only about two degrees lower than they could normally withstand.
  • Harris Construction Co. this week filed a demolition permit application with the city building inspector’s office to demolish the front portion of the Kansas Color Press building, 2201 Haskell. Davol Inc., which made medical instruments at its plant at 700 E. 22nd, had announced its plans for using the renovated building as a warehouse and distribution center.
