Two Lawrence women hospitalized after car wreck on U.S. Highway 40

Personnel from Wakarusa and Lecompton fire and rescue departments remove a victim from a vehicle that crashed, Monday, Oct. 13, 2014, on U.S. Highway 40 east of County Road 1029. The accident occurred Monday around 11:15 a.m., east of the intersection of the two roads. Both lanes of traffic on U.S. 40 were closed at the scene.

Two Lawrence women were hospitalized Monday after their vehicle struck an electrical pole and rolled in rural Douglas County.

Crystal Martin, 30, and Stephanie Silvers, 44, were both taken to Stormont-Vail HealthCare in Topeka. Officials there said Monday evening that Martin is in “satisfactory” condition but could not provide an update on Silvers.

The crash occurred about 11:15 a.m. along U.S. Highway 40, five miles west of Lawrence’s city limits, according to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The vehicle, a Dodge Ram, traveled westbound on U.S. 40 when it over-corrected after driving off the edge of the road, the report said. The car then crossed the center lane and entered the south ditch, striking an electrical pole and rolling one and a half times.

The report said that Martin, the driver, was wearing a seat belt and that Silvers was not.
