25 years ago: Michael Landon enjoys mixing with Lawrence folks

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 13, 1989:

Television star Michael Landon, in town to film “Where Pigeons Go To Die,” joked this week that he had met the entire population of Lawrence. “Yesterday, I met all of them,” he said at a press conference. “I spent about 2 1/2 hours going up and down Massachusetts meeting people and signing autographs. They’re nice people.” Landon said he believed in mixing with people: “I stay in a regular hotel, I drive my own car, and do my own shopping,” he said. “A lot of people tell you you can’t do that as a celebrity. But they just want to believe they’re more important than they really are…. Nobody needs eight bodyguards. All they’re doing is making sure they get noticed.” Filming for the TV movie, starring Art Carney and Landon, was to begin in a few days and was expected to take about three weeks.
