Kansas City Connection: Frisbee golf, gyros and German beer

When it comes to utilizing our city’s parks, few activities beat disc golf.

While throwing plastic Frisbees at chains isn’t terribly sophisticated, spending time outdoors playing a free round of disc is a great way to socialize or enjoy a little solitude amid some of the most scenic green spaces in the region.

In the past 15 years, I’ve seen little-used areas in Kansas City’s Rosedale Park, Blue Valley Park and Lawrence’s Riverfront Park turned into challenging, attractive disc golf courses thanks to the efforts of public works initiatives and civilian volunteers. Others, such as Waterworks in North Kansas City, or Cliff Drive in the historic Northeast neighborhood, offer dramatic views of the Kansas City skyline.

This weekend, an event geared toward maintaining the natural beauty of Kansas is being held at a private course in Stilwell, just south of Kansas City.

The third annual Kansas Conservation Classic, held by the Kansas Land Trust, will take place on Saturday at 8 a.m., followed by lunch and awards at noon. To register, visit klt.org/news-events. The event costs $30 a person.

Mr. Gyros

The three Mr. Gyros locations in Johnson County (8234 Metcalf in Overland Park, 8575 W. 135th St. in Stanley, and 14983 W. 119th St. in Olathe) don’t stand out too much from other strip mall structures, but inside they serve the fluffiest pita bread, most deliciously seasoned gyro meat and goopiest, tastiest tzatziki sauce this side of the Ionian Sea.

Owners Ted and Soula Jovaras immigrated to the U.S. from the island of Lemnos in 1955, and have been operating Mr. Gyros for several decades.

In addition to the gyros, souvlaki and Greek salads, the pastries — especially the baklava, tiramisu and custard-filled galaktoboureko — are well worth sampling. Mr. Gyros is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day but Sunday.

Kansas City Bier Company

Anyone looking to soak up some October sun and Oktoberfest suds should stop by the Biergarten at the Kansas City Bier Company, the new German-inspired microbrewery opened by Steve Holle at 310 W. 79th St. in Waldo.

KC Bier Co.’s offerings are on tap across the metro, but it’s more fun to visit its tasting room to sample brews including the Dunkel, Helles, Doppelbock and Hefeweizen while munching on an imported Bavarian pretzel or Weisswurst. The Biergarten, featuring picnic tables in a gravel patio along the Trolley Track Trail, is kid-friendly as well.

KC Bier Co. is open Tuesday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m. and is closed on Monday. Visit kcbier.com for more information.

While the flaming pylons in the creek are an impressive sight, I’m most excited about the Folk Music Festival featuring some of Kansas City’s best acoustic musicians from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.
