25 years ago: Local organization joins opposition in church demolition case

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 3, 1989:

The Lawrence Preservation Alliance this week joined with the city of Lawrence and the Kansas State Historical Society in their opposition to the demolition of the Old English Lutheran Church, 1040 New Hampshire Street. The LPA had filed a “friend of the court” brief with the Kansas Court of Appeals asking the court to uphold a ruling by the Douglas County District Court saying the city had the right to deny a demolition permit to Allen Realty Inc. In May 1988, Allen Realty had applied for a demolition permit for the building and an adjacent house but had been denied by the Lawrence City Commission following a recommendation received by commissioners by the Kansas State Historical Society. The society had made the recommendation based on the church building’s location within 500 feet of the Douglas County Courthouse, a registered historic landmark.
