25 years ago: Lawrence chosen to host Sunflower State Games

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 2, 1989:

Lawrence was named this week as the host for next summer’s Sunflower State Games, the first statewide competition for young athletes in Kansas. The event, scheduled for July 1990 at various locations around the city, was expected to bring in as many as 5,000 visitors during a usually slow season. “This will have a tremendous economic impact on Lawrence in a time that we are slower than we normally are,” said Wayne Osness, a Lawrence resident who served as the chair of Gov. Mike Hayden’s council on physical fitness. Lawrence had made its bid for the games shortly after hosting the national AAU Junior Olympics during the summer of 1988, according to Judy Billings, director of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce’s Convention and Visitors Bureau.
