40 years ago: KU raising funds for archiving of Gov. Docking’s papers

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 28, 1974:

A fund-raising dinner was to be held in the Kansas Union to offset the cost of moving and organizing the papers of Gov. Robert Docking, which had been donated to Kansas University. Docking earlier this month had announced the gift of all of his official and personal documents from his four terms in office to the Kansas Collection of the Spencer Research Library at KU, with the stipulation that the papers be made available to all researchers who wished to use them. Marvin Harder, political science professor and director of KU’s Capitol Complex Project, said this week that about $25,000 would be needed to put the papers in order. “We will need a full-time staff of two working for a year to make the papers fully useful,” Harder said. “This will include properly cataloguing, indexing and reclassifying the papers.” Anywhere from 100 to 400 people were expected to attend the fundraiser, with each couple being asked to contribute $100.
