Frigid temperatures expected Monday

Lawrence will experience extreme cold on Sunday and Monday, so bundle up — or better yet, make some hot cocoa and stay indoors.

During the day Monday, Lawrence can expect partly sunny skies with a high near 24 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. With northwest winds between 15 and 20 mph and gusts as high as 30 mph, the temperature will feel between minus 3 and 7 degrees — so don’t forget a scarf and gloves before heading outside.

Monday night, the National Weather Service predicts partly cloudy skies with a low around 7 degrees. However, with northwest winds between 5 and 15 mph, wind chill values can cause it to feel somewhere between minus 5 and 1 degrees.

The National Weather Service reports Sunday’s high to be 26 degrees and the low is expected to be 13 degrees. Sunday night’s skies are forecast to be mostly clear, with a low around 13. Wind chill values will be between minus 2 and 8 degrees with a west wind of 5 to 15 mph, and gusts as high as 20 mph.

The record high in Topeka on Nov. 16 was 78 degrees set in 1950 while the record low, set in 1940, was 9 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

The record high in Topeka for Nov. 17, set in 1999, is 76 degrees with a record low of 5 degrees set in 1959.
