40 years ago: Bennett defeats Miller in Kansas governor race

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 6, 1974:

Unofficial returns today showed that Republican Robert F. Bennett, president of the state Senate, had captured the Kansas governorship in the previous day’s election. Bennett’s win over Democratic Attorney General Vern Miller, coupled with Bob Dole’s win in the U.S. Senate race, had given Kansas Republicans their biggest victory since 1964. On the local ballot, officials were surprised by the overwhelming passage of the $11.75 million bridge bond proposal. Unofficial totals from the county’s 43 voting places and the absentee ballots showed 14,880 in favor of the issue and only 7,314 opposed. The 2-1 margin was well over the simple majority required for passage. The bond issue was to be split equally between the Kansas River Bridge and a five-year county program to replace 50 bridges in rural areas of Douglas County.
