Louisville, Ky. ? After defeating Kentucky on Friday in its NCAA Tournament opener, Kansas University’s baseball team lost, 6-3, to host Louisville — the regional’s top seed — Saturday at Jim Patterson Stadium.

The Jayhawks’ first loss at the double-elimination tournament set up a rematch between Kansas and Kentucky at 11 a.m. CDT today.

Kansas (35-25) recorded three errors in the first few innings against Louisville (47-15) and fell behind, 5-0, before its first run.

“I didn’t think it (our offensive approach) was very good,” KU coach Ritch Price said. “That was the one thing I addressed with our guys afterwards. (Then) we made four bad plays defensively and got ourselves in a hole we couldn’t dig ourselves out of.”

Five of the Cardinals’ six runs came in the first four innings. KU starter Frank Duncan (6-4) settled down after the rough start and pitched a bullpen-saving complete game, capped by three scoreless innings.

“I didn’t keep them off the bases as good as I could have with the 11 hits,” Duncan said. “You’re able to make the big pitches when you need to and minimize the damage as best you can. That’s what I tried to do and I thought I did a pretty good job of that.”

Duncan finished with four earned runs and limited Louisville to four hits in the final five innings.

His Cardinals counterpart, sophomore Anthony Kidston, limited the Jayhawks’ offense in key moments.

Kidston (8-0) allowed just five hits and two runs in seven innings. The Louisville pitching staff stranded 11 KU runners and worked out of three bases-loaded jams, the last one in the final inning.

Kansas will look to stay alive today against Kentucky, which it beat on Friday, 10-6. The Wildcats beat Kent State, 4-2, in an elimination game Saturday.

A KU victory this morning would set up an immediate rematch with Louisville at approximately 3 p.m.

To win the regional, the Jayhawks would have to beat the Cardinals not only today, but then again on Monday, because Louisville has yet to lose at the double-elimination regional.
