25 years ago: Lawrence spelling champ heads to D.C. for national bee

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 30, 1989:

  • Robbie Getz, 13, the Kansas spelling bee champion from Lawrence, left this week for Washington, D.C., where he was to represent the state in the 62nd annual National Spelling Bee. Robbie had defeated 98 contestants to win the state championship in Topeka six weeks previously. In Washington, he was to compete against 221 spellers from the United States, its territories, and Mexico. Robbie, a rising eighth-grader at West Junior High, was accompanied to the nation’s capital by his parents and his younger sister Hillary.
  • More than 400 graduates and their friends celebrated at a chaperoned, alcohol-free party after Lawrence High School’s graduation ceremonies this week. Parents of some members of the class of 1989 had organized the party as an alternative way to celebrate the event. The party, which was held at Gammon’s from 11 p.m. to 3 p.m., was judged to be a big success. “We had to almost push them out the door at 3 a.m.,” said a party organizer.
