25 years ago: Group seeks preservation of barbed wire building

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 26, 1989:

  • Members of the Lawrence Preservation Alliance were looking into the process of placing the riverfront’s old “barbed wire building” on the state and national historic registers. Bill Gaeddert, vice president of the LPA, said the group had filed preliminary site information with the Kansas Historical Society in preparation for a full nomination of the “Consolidated Barbed Wire Company Drawing Mill” building, which had been constructed in 1892. Gaeddert said the effort was in response to recent concerns that the building was not going to be preserved by the Chelsea Group, developers of the planned Riverfront Mall.
  • In spite of lack of sightings of one of the parents, the baby bald eagles at Clinton Lake were reportedly thriving, according to officials with the Army Corps of Engineers. The two eaglets in the single-parent nest looked healthy and were getting larger and more active, said park manager Dave Rhoades. Wildlife officials hadn’t seen one of the adult eagles since mid-April, but Rhoades said the remaining parent didn’t seem to be having trouble keeping up with the feedings. Wildlife officials agreed that the Clinton event was the first recorded bald eagle nesting in the state.
