Lubbock, Texas ? The Kansas University women’s track and field team moved up four spots to first place on the second day of the Big 12 Outdoor Championships.

Junior Lindsay Vollmer led the way for the defending national- and conference-champion Jayhawks. Vollmer, who won last year’s NCAA Outdoor heptathlon, scored 5,786 points to win her second straight Big 12 heptathlon title. Vollmer, the first-day leader, fell behind after Texas Tech’s Shanice Stewart won the long jump. Vollmer rallied with a victory in the javelin and finished ninth, ahead of Stewart, in the 800 meters.

“It feels really great to come out here and be able to repeat,” Vollmer said. “The Big 12 is a really tough conference. It’s humbling to be able to come out here and to be the best at something. It’s a really great and fun feeling.”

Sophomore Sydney Conley led the long jump with a mark of 6.23 meters (20 feet, 7.75 inches), but Kansas State’s Erica Twiss hit 6.30 meters on her final attempt to push Conley to second.

KU junior Jamie House placed second in the pole vault with a mark of 3.97 meters. Senior Abby Row hit 3.52 meters and placed seventh in the event to also score points for the Jayhawks.

In the shot put, sophomore Anastasiya Muchkayev and senior Jessica Maroszek both threw 16.10 meters for third and fourth places, respectively.

The final day of the Big 12 Outdoor meet is today. The Jayhawk women have 48 points and lead second-place K-State by three. The KU men sit eighth of nine teams with eight points.
