40 years ago: Eudora school addition delayed

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 16, 1974:

  • In Eudora, delays in final architectural plans for a major addition to Nottingham Primary School were expected to set back the start of construction to late summer, according to Supt. Charles Hill. The completion of the architectural drawings were behind schedule and were perhaps still several months away, Hill said. The Eudora Board of Education had hoped to advertise bids in April and begin construction in June, but now construction was not expected to begin until August or September. The $690,000 project was to add eight additional classrooms, a multi-purpose room, and rooms for kindergarten, music, reading and speech to the existing eight classrooms.
  • A recent Gallup poll showed the average American family spent $42 per week on food, up $5 from the previous year. In the eastern part of the U.S., the figure was highest — $49 — while the rest of the country reported about $40, according to the polling organization. In 1942, when Gallup had first asked about food costs, the weekly average had been $11.
