25 years ago: Commissioners fail to approve beer license for new Kwik Shop

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 8, 1989:

In a 2-2 split vote, the Lawrence City Commission this week failed to approve an application for a cereal malt beverage for a Kwik Shop at 15th and Kasold. Representatives of two churches and a girls’ camp near the proposed store argued that beer sales at the store would adversely affect the neighborhood. The group also pointed out that the store would be within 400 feet of a church, disqualifying it for beer sales under the city’s licensing ordinance. Representatives from Kwik Shop argued that the licensing ordinance was not applied equally throughout the city and that package sales of hard liquor were already taking place at the same shopping center.
