Corn, soybeans look promising; wheat harvest begins south of Lawrence

Recent rains and warm weather are making local corn and soybeans happy, though the precipitation this week may have delayed the area wheat harvest a bit.

Grain elevators south of Lawrence reported Friday that wheat is starting to trickle in, as the harvest continues to move north.

“We had just a little wheat here yesterday,” Steve Wilson, of Baldwin Feed Co. in Baldwin City, said Friday afternoon. “We had some tests and then the rain kind of came through a little bit yesterday. Some people are probably out there right now (harvesting).”

Over at the Overbrook grain elevator, Ralph Waldo said his co-op and one in Burlingame are also beginning to see wheat.

“We had one guy who brought in a sample today,” Waldo said Friday afternoon. “So (more farmers) will probably start bringing it in tomorrow.”

Rural Lawrence farmer Pat Ross said his 25 acres of sweet corn might be ready to harvest by next weekend “if Mother Nature cooperates.” And his other crops appear to be in for a successful year.

“The corn looks as good as it could this time of year. It really looks fantastic. Rain and this warm weather make it really thrive,” he said. “The soybeans are really starting to stretch out too.”

“We’re really pleased with our crop conditions right now,” he added.
