40 years ago: More neighborhood associations springing up in Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 19, 1974:

Lawrence citizens were finding neighborhood associations to be a helpful addition to the community, according to an article in today’s Journal-World. Three neighborhood groups had started in the spring of 1974, joining the three already in existence. The advantage of such groups could be expressed in the comment of Clark Brubaker, president of the East Lawrence Improvement Assn., who said, “I still think you can get more done at city hall as a group than as an individual.” This year had seen the formation of the Pinckney Neighborhood Assn., the Concerned Citizens of Far East Lawrence, and the Indian Hills Neighborhood Assn. Already active were the East Lawrence Improvement Assn., the North Lawrence Improvement Assn. and the Old West Lawrence Assn. The East and North Lawrence groups had received $50,000 and $10,000 respectively from the city federal revenue-sharing account; the funds had been spent on capital improvements to the neighborhoods such as playground equipment, landscaping, street lights, and alley and sidewalk repair.
