Raiders win third straight

The Lawrence Raiders’ offense took another step forward in its 7-3 youth baseball victory over BC Wilson on Wednesday at Hoglund Ballpark.

After being held scoreless for the first three innings, the Raiders rallied during a four-run fourth and three-run fifth on their way to a third straight win.

“We’ve spent a little bit more time in the cage the past couple of days to get more reps in, and I think it’s paying off,” Raiders coach Brad Romme said. “It’s them going up to the plate with the right approach like they’ve been taught and then just getting after it when they see a pitch they can get after and putting a good barrel on it.”

With the game tied at 1 in the bottom of the fourth, Doug Easum broke the game open with a three-run triple to center field.

“The guy (BC Wilson pitcher Brady Manning) was throwing low to mid-70s right down the middle, so you have to feel confident about that,” Easum said. “I just wanted to put a good swing on it, and I did.”

The Raiders’ clean-up hitter, Zach Bickling, went up to the plate four times, hoping to get the same pitch Easum got. He never got it, but he didn’t need to.

Bickling reached safely in all four appearances — hitting a single, drawing two walks and getting hit by a pitch. He came around to score twice and wreaked havoc on the base paths with four steals.

“Their pitchers were slow to the plate, so I could take it,” Bickling said. “I just had to wait for it.”

The Raiders (6-7) will try to get back to the .500 mark Friday against the Wichita Reds. Romme is confident that the Raiders can do that, provided they keep executing in each facet of the game.

“A solid performance on the mound, defense and some timely hitting,” Romme said. “But for sure we got to keep pitching it and catching it well.”
