25 years ago: Woman charged with K Mart parking lot stabbing

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 29, 1989:

  • A 26-year-old Chicago-area woman was charged this week with a felony count of aggravated battery stemming from a stabbing in the parking lot of the K mart Discount Store, 3106 Iowa. The woman, Jean M. Gallagher, remained in the Douglas County Jail this morning in lieu of $15,000 bond. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for later this week. Lawrence police reported that officers had been called about 8:50 a.m. on a recent Friday after an Arkansas man had entered the store and reported that he had been stabbed. Police said the victim had given the woman a ride into Lawrence in his tractor-trailer rig. He reported to police that he had been sleeping in the rig when he was stabbed once in the rib cage. Gallagher had run away from the store after the incident but was arrested about an hour later near 27th and Iowa, police said.
  • Authorities were investigating two car fires that appeared to have been deliberately set this morning. Lawrence firefighters had responded to a fire at 3:34 a.m. that had caused $8,000 damage to a 1988 Pontiac Firebird at Sixth and Maine streets. Less than 15 minutes later, firefighters had been called to Sixth and Louisiana to extinguish a fire in a 1984 Plymouth Horizon. Maj. Ron Coleman of the Lawrence fire department said it appeared both fires had been started the same way.
