25 years ago: Items worth more than $35,000 stolen in home burglary

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 25, 1989:

A Lawrence woman, after enjoying a visit to out-of-town friends, had returned the previous day to find that a burglar had invaded her home in the 300 block of Oklahoma, taking items valued at more than $35,000. Among the items stolen were a wedding ring valued at $14,000, several other pieces of jewelry, a stereo system, two VCRs, a typewriter, and a leather motorcycle jacket. Police said today that a house-sitter had visited the residence during the weekend had found nothing missing. The homeowner said she had no idea who had burglarized her house, but she believed it might have been someone who was acquainted with her. “There couldn’t be that many people who know where my stuff was and how long I was going to be out of town,” she mused. “And they didn’t … go through my stuff. They knew what they wanted.” She added that she had been recently divorced but did not suspect her ex-husband of the crime; nor did she suspect the house-sitter. Most of the items, she added, were not insured.
