40 years ago: Quick repairs avert water shortage in Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 24, 1974:

  • A severe water shortage was averted in Lawrence this week by the rapid repair of two broken transformers powering the main city water pumps. City officials today asked residents to continue their water-conservation measures for another day but said good progress was being made toward replenishing the water storage tanks. “I’d say we got it restored in the nick of time or we would have suffered loss of pressure and water outages,” said Charles Baker, director of utilities.
  • Movies showing in Lawrence theaters this week included “UFO Target Earth,” “The Terminal Man,” and “The Golden Voyage of Sinbad” at the Hillcrest. Patrons of the Sunset Drive-In (and a few of the nearby neighbors) could catch a double feature of “The Way We Were” and “Butterflies Are Free.” Downtown, the Granada was showing the Disney movie “Herbie Rides Again” and the Varsity was screening “Macon County Line.”
  • In Washington today, the Supreme Court ruled 8 to 0 that President Nixon was required to surrender White House tapes and papers sought by Special Prosecutor Leon Jaworski as evidence in the Watergate cover-up trial.
