Number of concealed carry applications down from last year

The state received the second highest number of concealed carry applications in the last fiscal year, but the number was much lower than the record from the previous year.

Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt reported that 14,205 applications for permits for concealed carry of a gun were received between July 1, 2013 and June 30 of this year.

But during the fiscal year before last, a record 25,316 applications were received. Schmidt said more than 83,000 Kansans have active concealed carry permits.

In Douglas County, the number of concealed carry licenses issued during the last fiscal year was 404, down from 455 the previous fiscal year.

In 2010, 2011 and 2012, fewer than 200 concealed carry licenses were issued each year.

Kevin Kufahl, a certified concealed carry instructor, said there is still a lot of interest from people in carrying a gun.

Kufahl said he really doesn’t look for customers but has no trouble filling an instruction class. “When you talk to people, they seem to be interested,” he said.
