40 years ago: Fight breaks out after Lawrence fireworks show

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 5, 1974:

  • At least six persons had been injured the previous night in a fight after the fireworks display at Kansas University’s Memorial Stadium. As the crowds in the stadium and on the nearby hill were dispersing at nearly 11 p.m., a group of about 40 men and women had reportedly begun harassing bystanders and damaging cars, using fists, buckles and wooden sticks. Campus police had arrived at the scene after two Midwestern Music and Art Camp members had reported seeing an apparently injured man on the ground at the Campanile. Those causing the injuries and damages fled on foot when the police arrived.
  • The Southwest Limited passenger train en route from Los Angeles to Chicago derailed near Melvern, Kansas, early this morning, injuring 42 passengers. No reports of critical injuries had been made after the accident, which sent victims to hospitals in Emporia, Ottawa, and Topeka. The last 13 cars of the 18-car train had derailed; the last six of them had overturned, and four of the cars had tumbled down a 50-foot embankment. The cause of the accident had not yet been determined.
