1200 block of Louisiana reopens to traffic

The 1200 block of Louisiana Street, which was closed on Tuesday for water line repairs, has reopened to traffic.

The city of Lawrence crews disconnected an 8-inch water main and closed the road to through-traffic.

A city water main failure on June 24 resulted in severe damage to 12th Street and the intersections of 12th Street and Louisiana and Ohio streets. In a memo, Public Works Director Charles F. Soules recommended that the street be reconstructed from intersection to intersection along 12th Street because of the extent of the damage. “Repairs would not be sufficient to restore the street and ultimately would result in an increase cost and additional unplanned inconvenience to traffic in and around campus,” the memo said. “This is also a City/KU bus route and requires the ability to carry those traffic loads.”

Soules said in the memo that funding for the project would be shared between the Utilities and Public Works Departments.
