Kansas University’s Student Senate recently opened a path to a modest funding source for Headquarters Counseling.

The funds will come from a 65-cent supportive services fee all students pay each semester. Although total revenue from the fee depends on enrollment, Drew Harger, assistant treasurer for KU’s student government, said the total has been about $30,000 per year.

Also eligible for the same funds are the Willow Domestic Violence Center and the GaDuGi SafeCenter. The Student Safety Advisory Board oversees the money and distributes it to the eligible organizations. Headquarters can apply with the other organizations beginning in the fall 2014, Harger said.

Headquarters has seen its funding decline by about 50 percent since 2011, Board President David Moore has said. To cope with funding cuts, Headquarters, which operates a suicide prevention hotline and provides counseling and bereavement services, has reduced the hours of its hotline.

Student fees helped support Headquarters in the past, up until two years ago. Harger, a volunteer at Headquarters, helped introduce the bill to make it eligible for funding again.
