25 years ago: New ‘go-anywhere hand-held cellular phone’ weighs in at 27 ounces

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 12, 1989:

  • An advertisement for Cellular One appeared today singing the praises of “Two Super Phones, One Super Price.” The “go-anywhere Motorola hand-held portable cellular phone … the ultimate in convenience,” weighing in at 27 ounces, was being offered in tandem with a “full-featured, fully-installed car phone” for a total of $1,199 (not including activation, talk time, or car phone antenna). The ad copy urged customers to “turn drive time into the most productive part of your business day!”
  • The Lawrence Association of Neighborhoods and the Lawrence Motor Carriers Assn. had reached an agreement in August on a voluntary program to ease problems associated with trucks not following designated routes within the city. An important part of the agreement was that the two groups would sponsor production and distribution of a map showing truck routes defined by city ordinance as well as recommended delivery routes. However, five months had passed and the maps had not yet been printed. “I hope that in the next week to 10 days, we’ll have the final proofs and be ready to print,” said Bob Walters, president of the LMCA. “It’s been a long, drawn-out process.”
