25 years ago: County denies permit for paint-gun area near Eudora

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 11, 1989:

The Douglas County Commission today unanimously rejected a request by Splatter Inc. for a conditional use permit for a 20-acre tract on which a “war game” would be played with paint guns. The tract in question was located about two miles northwest of Eudora along 15th Street, and several Eudora-area residents had come out against the plan. “We don’t like the concept of capture the flag,” said Lyle Weeks, a member of the Eudora Township Board. “We feel that if someone wants to get a rifle and fight, maybe they should join the armed forces.” The opponents cited ethical concerns about the game and added that it would probably cause traffic problems on 15th Street. At least one resident, however, came to the meeting to praise the game. “I feel that most of the arguments against this operation don’t hold water,” said Dan Roberts, who said he had formerly conducted a similar game in another county. No fights or injuries had occurred when he had run such a game, Roberts said. “Sometimes, they’d get rowdy and pretend they’re Rambos or something,” he said. “But we never had a fight.”
