25 years ago: Permit issued for riverfront mall construction

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 9, 1989:

The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers said today it had recently issued a permit allowing the construction of the riverfront retail center despite a number of requests for further study into the effects of the proposed structure on bald eagles. In a statement of findings issued by the corps, Col. John H. Atkinson said their analysis had found ‘no identified, significant, adverse environmental effects related to the work.” The permit, which had been issued Dec. 27, allowed construction of a 150,000-square-foot factory outlet shopping center at the old Bowersock Mills & Power Co. site on the Kansas River.

Members of the National Society of Film Critics met in New York this week to announce their choices for the best in 1988 film-making. “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” was chosen as the year’s best picture, while its director, Philip Kaufman, was honored by the society with its best director award. Winners in the acting categories included Michael Keaton for “Beetlejuice” and “Clean and Sober,” Judy Davis for “High Tide,” Dean Stockwell for “Married to the Mob” and “Tucker,” and Mercedes Ruehl for “Married to the Mob.” “The Thin Blue Line” was the critics’ choice for best documentary.
