40 years ago: Lawrence children experience first school day with new time change

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 8, 1974:

  • Lawrence schools reported no major problems created this week by the historic wintertime switch to Daylight Saving Time, intended by the Nixon administration to save energy. Superintendent Carl Knox, after informally surveying six Lawrence School District 497 schools today, showed no excessive absence or tardiness and little parental reaction to the change.
  • Local merchants were calling the year just ended “the best year yet” as far as spending and profits were concerned. Although Lawrence had experienced its share of shortages and higher prices in 1973, inflationary spirals had not adversely affected economic activity in the city, according to bankers and store managers.
  • In Topeka, Rep. Michael Glover, D-Lawrence, puzzled his legislative colleagues this week by wearing his old Army uniform. Glover said he wore it as “just a quiet demonstration on the plight of veterans.” He went on to say that there wasn’t much that could be done for veterans at the state level, but he had filed a bill which would provide free books and tuition for veterans at state institutions.
