40 years ago: LMH expansion hits temporary snag

From the Lawrence Journal-World for Feb. 24. 1974:

  • Plans for architectural and planning work for a new Lawrence Memorial Hospital were delayed this week due to projected financial figures and disagreements on a proposed architectural and construction contract. Hospital trustees had voted 3-0 to reject the contract and said they needed to devote further study to the financial report before proceeding further. In a related development, the board unanimously agreed that the new facility would be built adjacent to its then-current site and that the 1969 addition to the original facility would be retained and utilized in the new structure.
  • Movies playing in Lawrence theaters this week included “Serpico” with Al Pacino, Alexander Solshenitsyn’s “One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich,” Marlon Brando in “Last Tango in Paris,” and Streisand and Redford in “The Way We Were.”
