25 years ago: Abrupt closing of day care center catches parents off guard

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 24. 1989:

Some Lawrence parents were scrambling today after a local day care center closed abruptly. Bo Newsom, owner of Kidworks Inc., 200 Mount Hope Ct., had written letters to parents and the center’s staff a few days previously telling them he planned to close the center today. A total of 44 children had attended the center. Newsom declined to comment on his reasons for closing, but Bev Dolezal, the center’s director, said Newsom’s letter stated that he had decided to close because he hadn’t been able to break even on the business. “I said, ‘You’ve got to give people more notice than that — two weeks or 30 days at least,’ Dolezal said. “But he said he had considered giving people less notice and closing immediately.” The closing was indicative of a larger problem for parents finding affordable day care, especially for infants and toddlers, according to Peggy Scally, child care licensing nurse at the Douglas County Health Department.
