40 years ago: Flu has peaked locally, Lawrence doctors say

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 23. 1974:

  • The incidence of flu among Lawrence schoolchildren may have reached its peak and was perhaps on its way down, according to two local pediatricians. Dr. Helen Gilles and Dr. Vernon Branson said today the number of patients with flu symptoms they had treated had begun to decline. Dr. Gilles added that not many serious complications had developed and only a few children had been hospitalized. The flu was still keeping students out of school, with absences at most Lawrence elementary schools more than doubling this week.
  • A severe snowstorm that had been forecast for the Lawrence area turned out to be not so bad after all. Heavy snow fell briefly in the area but melted quickly, and local utility companies reported no major damage from the wind and ice.
