Train clips unoccupied vehicle in Lawrence

A Burlington-Northern Santa Fe train struck an unoccupied vehicle sitting too close to the tracks Tuesday afternoon in Lawrence.

Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police Department spokesperson, said a crew of landscaping workers parked a truck alongside the rail near Abe & Jake’s Landing. A door to the vehicle was left ajar and hanging over the tracks.

The train, heading east, then clipped the vehicle around 12:45 p.m. McKinley said nobody was injured and the train was not delayed for long. Andy Williams, a BNSF spokesperson, said the train, carrying 53 cars, was not damaged.
