40 years ago: KU basketball fans on their best behavior following appeal from team

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 10, 1974:

  • A letter from the Kansas men’s basketball team, published earlier this week in the Journal-World, seemed to be having the desired effect. In the letter, the team had criticized the recent fan practice of throwing debris on the court at Allen Fieldhouse. In a recent game in which the Jayhawks had defeated Colorado, there had not been a single instance of debris-throwing. “The players set the tone with their usual sportsmanship and even the coaches were less vehement in their actions regarding the activity on the court,” a news brief read today. “The result, in the opinion of many spectators, was the best-behaved KU crowd in a long time.”
  • It was announced today that traffic control signals were to be installed at the Second and Locust intersection in the next six to nine months. The Lawrence City Commission this week approved ordering the lights, which had been long sought by North Lawrence residents.
  • Scientists in California were getting ready for their first close-up look at the clouds surrounding Venus as Mariner 10 glided by the planet and sent pictures back to Earth. Mariner was expected to slow down on its approach to Venus and then turn toward Mercury.
