40 years ago: Caller reports Santa-sighting to Lawrence police

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 26, 1974:

A tongue-in-cheek report turned in to Lawrence police this week claimed a possible sighting of Santa Claus. The caller, Vic Shore, 101 Michigan, reported he and his family had been sitting in their living room late on Dec. 24 when they had heard objects falling to the ground outside, which later proved to be decorated Christmas packages. Shore said he believed they had fallen from a sleigh passing overhead. “The complainant advised he believed the occupant of the sleigh might have been DWI, due to the reckless manner in which it was being operated,” the report read. “Complainant also advised the sleigh might create a traffic hazard if it were set down someplace.”
