40 years ago: Lawrence receives cold, snowy Christmas

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 25, 1974:

  • An earlier snowfall remained in the area for Christmas today, and so did cold temperatures. The mercury had dropped to 14 degrees overnight and was expected to reach only the mid-30s today before dropping below 20 degrees again tonight.
  • An uneasy calm prevailed in most of the world’s trouble spots despite threats from terrorists and the uncertainties of inflation and unemployment. A cease-fire proclaimed for Northern Ireland and England by the IRA appeared to be holding, and threats of attacks on pilgrims visiting Christian holy places had not materialized.
