Two men arrested after high-speed chase Saturday morning

A 24-year-old Pittsburg man was charged Monday with attempting to elude a police officer, cocaine possession, DUI and possession of drug paraphernalia after he allegedly led police on a high-speed chase through eastern Lawrence early Saturday morning.

The incident began around 2:20 a.m. Saturday when two Lawrence police officers witnessed a vehicle driven by Alexander Jared Miller traveling north in the 600 block of Vermont, a southbound one-way street, Lawrence police spokesman Sgt. Trent McKinley said Monday.

The vehicle passed the officers, who were also in the 600 block of Vermont, at about 50 miles per hour, McKinley said. An officer then went after the vehicle as it turned east on Sixth Street, then north over the Kansas River bridge at speeds of approximately 60 miles per hour, “weaving between other vehicles,” McKinley said.

Miller then went east on Locust Street, “nearly overturning” his vehicle as it rounded the corner. As the officer pursued the vehicle, it continued to pull away, running the stop sign at North Seventh Street and accelerating to speeds of about 100 miles per hour.

The officer caught up to the vehicle after it crashed in a field near Ninth and Locust streets, but both Miller and a passenger, Daniel Michael Bear, 25, of Lawrence, fled on foot, McKinley said. Officers soon captured Miller and Bear. The two were booked into the Douglas County Jail.

Miller was booked on suspicion of attempting to elude a police officer, cocaine possession, DUI and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bear was booked on suspicion of obstruction of the legal process, two unrelated counts of failure to comply and an unrelated charge of failure to appear.

At Miller’s first appearance Monday, Douglas County Judge Pro Tem James George set Miller’s bond at $4,000. Miller was in jail as of Monday evening.

Bear will make his first appearance Dec. 23. He was released from jail on a $2,910 bond Saturday.
