Orlando showing earns Perry Ellis Big 12 Player of the Week

Kansas forward Perry Ellis (34) gets up to put a shot off the glass over Michigan State forward Branden Dawson (22) during the first half on Sunday, Nov. 30, 2014 at the HP Field House in Kissimmee, Florida.

Perry Ellis’ Thanksgiving weekend performance wasn’t just the best at the Orlando Classic. It was the best in the Big 12.

The conference named KU’s starting junior power forward the Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week, marking the third time the Wichita native earned the recognition.

A 6-foot-8 forward, Ellis contributed to four Kansas wins in the past week, including three wins and a tournament MVP award in Florida.

Ellis scored at least 17 points in every outing on the week, averaging 18.8 points and 7.5 rebounds. His top performance came against Tennessee, as he finished with a season-high 24 points and 13 boards. Ellis shot 48.9 percent (23-of-47) from the field and 71.1 percent (27-of-38) from the free throw line in the four contests.

The Big 12 named West Virginia junior forward Jonathan Holton the conference’s Newcomer of the Week for the second straight time.

Holton averaged 17.5 points and 8.0 rebounds in a 2-0 week for the Mountaineers. The junior forward recorded his second double-double of the season with game highs in points (21) and rebounds (10) against the College of Charleston. Earlier, he posted 13 points, seven rebounds, four blocks and three steals in a victory over VMI.
