Today in Lawrence: Buskers or bust; hot rods and fiddling competition

The Lawrence Busker Festival, which includes acts such as The Silly People, starts today at 5 p.m.

Rain then sun

Today may bring a few showers in the morning with a 30 percent chance of rain. Storms will give way to partly cloudy skies and a high of 98 degrees in the afternoon. The evening low is expected to be 77 degrees, with some continuing cloudiness. Saturday will bring on the heat with sunny skies, no clouds and a high of 98. Sunday will be a little hotter, with a high of 99, but a few clouds may keep the sun at bay.

BINGO!

Line up some winning numbers at Friday night bingo at the Eagles Lodge — you never know when you might come home a big winner! Doors open at 5:30 p.m., refreshments start at 6 p.m. and bingo starts 7 p.m. The Eagles Lodge is at 1803 W. Sixth St.

Buskers or bust

The buskers are back in full force tonight, Saturday and Sunday! The Seventh Annual Lawrence Busker Festival starts tonight at 5 p.m. with acts performing until 11 p.m. in downtown Lawrence. The buskers, or street performers, will keep the show going from 2 to 11 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. Acts vary from sword swallowers to jugglers to breakdancers. You’ll have to see it to believe it, so head downtown for the buskers!

Start your engine

Get your motor running for Saturday’s automotive extravaganza: The Rev It Up Hotrod Hullabaloo. Car registration starts at 8 a.m., and the car show is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at South Park, 12th and Massachusetts streets. There will be a parade, music and food for all. Cars will be given awards in various categories, and all proceeds go to benefit Lawrence charities.

Fall delights

Get ready for the fall gardening season with Gardening 103: Fall Gardening Basics, 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at the Extension Office, Dreher Building, Douglas County Fairgrounds, 2110 Harper St. The class will be taught by Douglas County Extension Master Gardeners and will include topics related to fall gardening: houseplants, soil, lawns, fall vegetables, trees, bulbs and insect pests.

Picking, grinning

Grab a shady spot and listen to the jam sessions unfold. The 34th Annual Kansas State Fiddling & Picking Competition starts at noon Sunday and goes until 5 p.m. at South Park, 12th and Massachusetts streets. Bring a blanket, have a seat and cheer for the competitors in this musical contest that’s more like a reunion.
